Buildings drive ~39% of global energy-related emissions; ~11% comes from materials and construction (embodied carbon). Upfront carbon is projected to account for half of new-build footprints through 2050, which is why reusing structures is prioritized in leading frameworks.
Design coalitions urge “prevent, reduce, plan” approaches—starting with renovation over new build when feasible—and highlight that concrete, steel, and aluminum alone represent ~23% of total global emissions. Positioning conversions as a carbon-efficient option can support municipal approvals and ESG goals.
